The land that the house sits on was part of a 160 acre parcel divided up as part of the Homestead Act of 1862. It is believed that a Captain Cassel of the Union Army acquired the land as part of his severance pay. --- The Cassel Grove name came from the name of the one room school house, part of district 34, that used to sit on the far southeastern corner of the 160 plot. --- Although exact dates and details of the home's rich history and lineage are presently being researched, the Cassels lived in the house until the Wickhorst's, who remained owners of the property until 1975 when the Jensens purchased the property. The Jensens renovated the home with great love and care and turned it into the beautiful home that it is today. Gandy House [See Website]= 715 5th St. <BR> Humboldt, Nebraska 68376 1264701808 The Gandy House was built in 1910 by Dr George and Clementine (Rousek) Gandy. Dr Gandy was born in Humboldt on January 3, 1880, and graduated from Humboldt public schools. After leaving to obtain his medical degree, he returned to Humboldt in 1904 and set up his practice in the Park Hotel. His father Dr James L. Gandy, was the first physician to locate in Humboldt in 1869. His mother, Mrs Mary E. (Otto) Gandy, ran a drug store. The native rock that surrounds the property, that are featured on the front porch and sun room, were gathered from farm fields surrounding Humboldt. Dr Gandy, it was told, paid fifty cents a day for local persons to bring these rocks to his property. The working fireplace in the living room is also of this native rock. Part of the original house was one of the first wooden buildings built around the Humboldt square. It was relocated to its present location when brick buildings were built to replace the wooden business buildings around the square.
